Special Education Services: Early Childhood

Special Education: Early Childhood Services

Do You Have a Concern About the Development of Your Child ?

  • Our school district provides free screening for children with suspected delays in development.
  •  Screening and testing may result in the offer of services provided by an Early Childhood Program.

What Are Early Childhood Programs?

  • These programs provide education services to children with disabilities ages 3 through 5.
  • They provide support to parents and caregivers.
  • They target children’s needs in motor, learning, speech, language, self-help, vision, hearing and social/emotional areas.

How will I know if my child may have impairment and a need for special education services?

The easiest way to answer this question is to ask some questions.  The following questions may be of assistance:

  •  Is my child difficult to understand when he/she speaks?
  • Does my child have difficulty attending to activities?
  • Does my child have difficulty listening to stories and understanding what is read?
  • Does my child have difficulty getting along with others or forming appropriate relationships with others?
  • Does my child have difficulty understanding basic concepts?
  • Is my child having difficulty in pre-school for a reason that is not clear to me?

How Does A Child Become Involved in an Early Childhood Special Program?

A child may be referred by anyone who believes the child may be delayed in development. If you have concerns about your child’s development, please contact your school district.

How Does the Program Work?

  • Each child’s program is based on individual needs.
  •  Individual plans are developed by a team of professionals and parents.
  • Half-day classes are offered during the school calendar year.
  • Transportation is provided.
  • Parent involvement is an integral component.
